Magic With MTR brand masala

Quick Bisi Bele Bhath

The traditional preparation of this dish is quite elaborate and involves preparing the powder from scratch using various lentils and spices. However I use the store brought powder MTR brand which eliminates this step making the cooking easier. Also add any vegetables of choice.

  • 1 cup rice (raw)
  • ½ cup Toor daal
  • 1 medium onion
  • 2 medium tomatoes
  • 1/4 cup shelled peas
  • ½ cup carrot  (peeled & chopped)
  • ½ cup beans (stringed and chopped)
  • Tamarind  juice (size of a small lime)
  • 2 tsp mustard seeds
  • 5-10 curry leaves
  • A pinch asafetida
  • Oil
  • salt
  • 8-10 Cashew nuts

     2 Tbsp MTR brand Bisi Bele bhath powder

  • Soak tamarind in a little warm water and extract juice and keep it aside.
  • Heat water in a vessel and add the chopped vegetables along with little salt and cook. Keep aside.
  • Wash rice and daal separately and place them in pressure cooker in separate containers until cooked. Note: The rice needs to be soft and not separate unlike for the rice dishes. After the daal is cooked, mash it well.
  • Take a heavy bottom pan and then heat oil.
  • Do the seasoning of mustard seeds, curry leaves, asafetida, and broken cashew pieces.
  • Add the chopped onions, after it turn light brown add the tomatoes and stir until the tomatoes are cooked.
  • Add the cooked vegetables and give it a good stir.
  • Add the MTR brand Bisi bele bhat powder, tamarind juice, salt and continue to cook.
  • Add rice and daal  mix well. Let this simmer on the stove for about 15- 20 minutes.
  • Keep stirring in between so that the daal does not get stuck at the bottom.
  • Serve hot with raita, chips/boondi. Add a small spoon of ghee, just before serving.

Bread Upma

I learnt the basic recipe of Bread Upma from my friend. She makes this often as an evening afterschool snack.I tweaked it a bit to include more vegies and make it for breakfast/lunch box.

Preparation Time: 10 minutes
Cooking time: 20 minutes
Serves: 3
Bread6 slices
Onion chopped1 medium
Chilli powder1/2 tsp
Coriander powder1/2 tsp

Your dinner party is made if you choose this recipe!  MAGGI INSTANT NOODLES pancakes topped with stir-fried vegetables… now that certainly is something nobody can say "No" to.

Makes 4 servings

For The Hot and Sour Sauce
1/4 cup tomato puree
1/2 cup vinegar
1/2 cup sugar
1 tbsp chilli sauce
1 tbsp cornflour
salt and to taste

For The Noodle Rosti
1 vegetarian seasoning cube
salt to taste
4 tsp oil for cooking

For The Stir-fried Vegetable Topping
1 tbsp oil
2 cups shredded vegetables (carrots, french beans, cabbage etc.)
1/4 cup bean sprouts
salt to taste

For the noodle rosti

  1. Heat plenty water in a broad saucepan.
  2. Put the MAGGI INSTANT NOODLES in boiling water and cook for 2 minutes.
  3. Drain and discard the water.
  4. Mix the MAGGI INSTANT NOODLES  with the seasoning cube and salt and divide them into 4 equal portions.
  5. Heat a 125 mm. (5") diameter non-stick pan with 1 teaspoon of oil.
  6. Loosely place one portion of the boiled noodles on the non-stick pan.
  7. Cook the MAGGI INSTANT NOODLES rosti on both sides until golden brown in colour.
  8. Repeat with the remaining noodles to make 3 more rostis.

For the stir-fried vegetable topping

  1. Heat the oil in a pan, add the mixed vegetables, bean sprouts and salt and saute on a high flame for 3 to 4 minutes.
  2. Remove from the flame and keep aside.

How to proceed

  1. Place a MAGGI INSTANT NOODLES  noodle rosti on a serving plate, top with a portion of the stir-fried vegetables and spoon some hot and sour sauce over it.
  2. Repeat with the remaining ingredients to make 3 more servings.
  3. Serve immediately.

Britannia Biscuits Pudding


200gm Britannia biscuits
2 tbl spns coco powder
1 tbl spn drinking chocolate
1 tea spn vanilla essence
1 cup fresh cream
1/2 cup hot milk
8 tbl spns powdered Sugar
1 tea spn coffee powder
The cream used for cake decoration can be used for this

Keep 2-3 layers of biscuits in a vessel (use large bottomed vessel) and soak them with 1/4 cup milk.
Inn a separate bowl, mix sugar and remaining milk till the sugar is dissolved. Then add coco, coffee, chocolate, vanilla and cream. Mix slowly to get a uniform mixture. Taste the mixture at this stage, if sugar is less, add some more to suit your taste.
Now pour this mixture on the soaked biscuits.
Chill in the refrigerator (do not freeze it) and serve.
Serves : 4
